And now Document Scanner (called Simple-scan by the Software Manager) works. This then installed a needed driver apparently. I then ran from the menu "HPLIP Toolbox" and played along with its setup demand. I then successfully experimented a fairly simple solution by installing HPlip-gui (despite HPlip already installed by default, I believe). I did find it in Software Manager (shown as not installed), and by which ippusbxd in the terminal I had also found it not to be there. In the limited hour time I had to search, I came across no info on how to reinstall it if needed. I came in online search across rather long, complicated, and not very clear pages and forum conversations dealing with such a problem, including often, for instance, a recommendation to purge something called ippusbxd.

Yes, they both saw and reported the HP hardware, but when trying to scan instantly gave an error: "Failed to Scan. The two scanner applications I tried however both failed. The HP DeskJet 4100e printer/scanner could easily be used to print via a USB cable (very difficult to set up wireless printing on Linux).
